Calyx Container’s Art of Glass Film Series, Episode 5: Justin Carter. We directed and shot stills in a nationwide campaign highlighting Virginia native, cannabis activist and pipemaker Justin Carter. Justin specializes in mesmerizing fume scratch techniques to create his signature psychedelic dichroic patterns and adorned opals. In his personal life, Justin has a deep passion for fishing, which we got to witness firsthand as he guided us on a bass trip along the James River.

Shot for 41º North Magazine. The Quonnie Siren Oyster Co. story is one of resource protection and the hope of one woman to teach her daughters to be better stewards of the sea. I got to spend the day with Jennifer Scappatura and her amazingly badass family while they taught me the ins and outs of oyster farming and all about the magical pure salt waters of Quonochontaug Pond.

I followed along with author W. Hodding Carter (On the Trail of Benedict Arnold) and his crew as they constructed and attempted to row a single bateau, retracing Benedict Arnold’s 1775 military expedition to Quebec. The boat was built to the exact specifications of those used by Arnold’s men and they strove to make the same trip in the same number of days, at the same time of year wearing the same woolen attire. What followed was an adventure by turns harrowing and hilarious, as the small band braved Maine weather and water to complete the trip.

We spent a few days in Maine with uber naturalist, artist, author, professor, ultra marathoner and all around wild man, Bernd Heinrich. We stayed in his barely solar-powered cabin that is totally off the grid on hundreds of raw acres. (We had to get a ride in via his jacked up 4X4.) We chopped firewood, studied the birds, built flowerbeds, battled the black flies and got to know him and his wife. Bernd is connected to the Earth in a way that I will always strive for, yet likely never attain.

We directed and shot stills in a nationwide campaign highlighting glass artists Liz Wright, who’s known for her skillfully sculpted aquatic ecosystem glass recyclers. Liz’s core inspiration stems from her roots in Virginia Beach, growing up at the edge of the sea. Her artworks illustrate the dynamic qualities that ocean life and her glass sculptures share.

Calyx’s resident artist, Vela G, collaborates with his long time friend and fellow lampwork master, Mike Shelbo, from Vista California. Vela & Shelbo are two of the biggest names in the glass community and among cannabis enthusiasts. As seen on Netflix’s ‘Blown Away’, Shelbo exhibits his patented goblin design, inspired by his love for sculpture as a method of self-expression, alongside one of Vela’s unique striped glass rigs.

We directed and shot stills in a nationwide campaign highlighting Philadelphia underground cannabis activist and pipemaker Aaron Golbert aka Marble Slinger. Slinger is best know for his visages of pop culture icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Sherlock Holmes, as well as his sandblasted color-blended pipes and tubes. His appropriation of the Morton “Assault” Girl has brought him worldwide acclaim.
